The hidden job market: the jobs filled before they're posted
A large share of roles are filled before they're ever advertised β through networks, referrals, and recruiters. If you only apply to postings, you're competing for the smaller, more crowded half.
Here's the uncomfortable truth about job boards: they show you the roles that couldn't be filled quietly first. A large share of positions β by many long-standing estimates, around half or more β are filled through referrals, internal moves, and recruiters before a public posting ever goes up. That's the hidden job market, and if job boards are your only channel, you never see it.
Why the visible market is the harder one
The roles that do get posted attract the application flood: dozens to hundreds of applicants, ranked by an ATS, skimmed in seconds. You can absolutely win there β with a tailored CV and sharp, quantified evidence β but you're playing the most crowded table in the room. The hidden market is less crowded precisely because fewer people know how to reach it.
How to get into it
- Make yourself referable. Referrals are the front door to the hidden market. Keep a clear, current LinkedIn and CV, and tell the people who know your work what you're looking for β specifically. "I'm exploring senior product roles in fintech" gives someone something to act on. "Let me know if you hear of anything" doesn't.
- Build relationships before you need them. The best time to grow a network is when you're not job-hunting. Stay in touch, help people, be visible in your field. Warm intros come from warm relationships, not cold asks.
- Work with a specialist recruiter. A good recruiter in your niche knows about roles before they're posted and can put you in front of a hiring manager directly. They're paid by the employer, and they're incentivized to place you well.
- Reach out with a specific reason. Targeted, genuine outreach to a team you admire β referencing something real about their work β occasionally surfaces a role that was about to be created. Generic "do you have any openings" messages don't.
- Prepare, so a warm intro converts. Access gets you the conversation; your track record wins the role. Have your CV and your story ready before the door opens.
This is the thinking behind the coaching side of letsapply.now. A great CV wins the visible market β and a coach in your corner, plus a recruiting team that lives in the hidden one, opens the door to the roles you'd never have found on a job board. Both halves matter. Most people only play one.
